At the 2003 CEDIA (Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association) convention, Dolby Labs unveiled Pro Logic IIx, a new decoding process that combines elements of the company’s highly regarded Pro Logic II and Dolby Digital EX surround-sound decoding schemes.

PL II derives 5.1 audio channels from two-channel sources, while DD EX offers 5.1 discrete channels and a sixth, matrixed surround-back channel (often played through two speakers) from digital sources (DVD, HDTV, some satellite programs). Pro Logic IIx utilizes an entire Dolby Digital EX system with the legacy of two-channel and 5.1 non-EX encoded soundtracks. While explaining to consumers that they should use a Pro Logic technology for their discrete Dolby Digital sources seems backwards at best, the user can now use this one Super Dolby decoding format for all material. Dolby will continue to license Dolby Pro Logic II and Dolby Digital as well.
